As a frequent journal updater myself, I was quickly drawn in by this memoir's unique focus, a man reading his recently deceased mother's journals to better understand her and also reach a greater understanding of the upheavals going on in his own life. The story goes back and forth between Dave's own experience and excerpts from his mother's journals. But even beyond the poignant moments that come through this aspect, it's an honest look at what it's like to search for a sense of home and happiness. This point is further explored through descriptions of Dave's travels and expat assignments in Europe and around the world. He travels from one side of the world to the other with dizzying frequency, and he perfectly captures the feeling of what it's like to keep traveling once the excitement and novelty have worn thin.But my highest praise would be for the treatment of the subject of death. Nothing's sugarcoated, and it's very refreshing to get a perspective this real.
The language is a little course in places, but the emotion comes through well. I enjoyed this book all through and would especially recommend to anyone wanting a fresh perspective on work, travel or who has lost someone close.

There are so many stories in life and some of them just beg to be told. As David jets around the world his mother etches a simple life full of tremendous value to those fortunate enough to touch it. I loved reading this book, I laughed, I cried, I introspected deeply on my own life.
The spirit of David Scott’s mom came alive through the pages and left a lasting impression of hope and grace.
Highly recommend.
First off, the dry humor the author extends in this book is fantastic. He captures the automotive world and its relationships amongst the industry accurately. I really enjoyed reading his story about chasing his success, only to be reminded about what living life is all about, thanks to the insight and knowledge his mother passed on in her journals. I also enjoyed reading the excerpts from the journals, as I found them very inspiring. I highly recommend this story. You won't be disappointed.
Dave Tank has written a compelling book containing two stories in one his and his mother's (the latter in the form of journal entries). The juxtaposition of circumstances is undeniable--one life ending while the other (metaphorically) just beginning--yet so is the love between them. Dave's bold decision-making throughout and his self-deprecating sense of humor are highly relatable. This is a quick and thought-provoking read which sticks with you long after you finish the last page.
This book had me laughing in public to the point that people were looking at me funny. It's relatable and enlightening and offers an interesting perspective on introspection and life. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good laugh or a good read
Let me preface this review by stating this is not typically the type of book I would read; I tend to go back and forth between rock n roll autobiographies (Motley Crue's The Dirt may be the best book ever written) and Business Strategy books (yes, 2 different ends of the literary spectrum). However, Dave has written a book to which anyone who cares about their family can relate. His writing style is easy to read and the book is a page turner; as a result, I read the book on flights to and from Detroit/Austin, TX one weekend.
The book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions in its journey laughter, sadness, reflection and wondering if you really are valuing the meaningful aspects of life and dedicating your time and efforts appropriately.
Perhaps the most telling review I can give the book is after I had finished the book and my plane landed in Detroit....as I was driving home, I called my mom.
I stayed up until 3 am reading this book. Dave Tank's turn of phrase is only outdone by his love for his mother. Well written, sweet story. If we're lucky, we live to see our parents move on to whatever is next. It's hard to feel that way, but it is heart-achingly true. I lost my father not too long ago, right after Dave lost his mother, and this book was cathartic. It's okay to see the wonderment in every day and continue to share it with loved ones who are no longer here.
Also, take a look around the world! The story is about more than loss, it's a fun jab and giving the finger to corporate work and a fun jaunt to Paris.

Impressive debut memoir. I love how Dave intertwined his mother's journal entries with his own life journey. What a gift to her children that she kept journals.
I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir - so many of Dave's experiences resonated with me - from living and feeling lonely in Paris to his grief following the death of his mother. I laughed and I cried. It did have to put it down for a bit, his pain was too great to bear.
