I heard a lot about this book before I ever read it I waited for quite some time to read it, so that I would be able to do a better review and include more details when I finally did review. I have to say, part of me understands why this book was touted as such a fabulous and outstanding book, and part of me wonders if this was too much hype and not enough delivery. This book is not bad. I think most people would enjoy it just for the solid writing and the superb usage of language. Still, I did not get the shocking, absolutely earth-shattering twist that I had heard so much about. The characters are logical in the beginning and the book moves along slowly, but steadily. I found myself quite liking the first portion, actually.
Then everything changes. Literally everything.
New characters are introduced and the book becomes, for a while, all about them. I got confused and then got over it, but after that the story had a different feel and it wasn't as exciting for me.
This is a complex novel, and a lot of thought went into it, so please don't just discount it. Give it a read and see what you think.
One final thought: for a book called "The Quick," this was actually stunningly long. Excellent book for a holiday when you have some free reading time.
Overall, it was not exactly what I had expected, but the writing was brilliant and the story was different.

I was intrigued by the premise of the book -- London near the turn of the century; a country poet discovering the city; sinister things afoot. I had, however, missed the word 'supernatural' in the summary. It was much to my chagrin that I discovered, approximately one-third of the way through the book, that I'd fallen in love with a book about... well, vampires.
I'd gone head-over-heels for Owen's prose; she has some wonderful turns of phrase. It was therefore with a heavy heart that I attempted to decide whether or not to continue. I've read and seen good stories about vampires, but for the most part, it feels like everything's been done before -- I didn't expect anything as subtle or lovely as Let the Right One In (original movie version), for example.
In the end, I completed the novel; the story was passable and mildly entertaining, and the writing -- in the end -- made it worth it. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who loves vampire books, and warmly to those who enjoy beautiful writing and don't mind the presence of such creatures within the pages of their books.

It has been a long while since I picked up a book that totally captivated, mesmerized and tantalized me more than Lauren Owen's new gothic thriller, "The Quick". Loving vampires and vampire stories as I do, I was happily surprised to read her unique take on dreary olde England and the way she told the story of James Norbury's life and family as they are wound into the life of the undead and how one comes to recognize "The Quick" from the The Dead". Being a "starred" review in Publisher's Weekly instantly got my attention by their praise and there was not one page that lacked interest and intrigue as I stayed up way later than normal in reading one, two or three chapters, always looking around the room to see if I were still alone and there was no errant shadow of an undead waiting for me to finish a page before transforming me as the newest member of the secret, exclusive Aegolius Club. My regret when I closed the book after the last page was there were not five or six more chapters to go. One can only hope the furtile, imaginative mind of Lauren Owen is already working on the sequel to this book and I dare say I will try to be one of the first to purchase with joy the new story and of course, during the daylight hours!
I was uncertain what to expect from this book, because of the mixed messages in the reviews. It's presented as a Victorian gothic vampire novel, but many of the reviews seem to have been expecting only parts of that description. The dire reactions to gruesome events made me wonder if the novel would take a graphically violent horror turn. Well, I didn't find it so. I thought the setting and style to be suitably Victorian, in a creditable gothic style. Yes, here are vampires, and consequent killing, but no more explicitly violent than non-supernatural novels of the same general style (e.g. those involving murders, as many do).
This is a longish book, as befits the style. It could have been considerably longer, and satisfactorily so, given the material. The ending was somewhat abrupt, considering the build-up, and I'm hoping for a sequel. I suppose that last statement puts it in a nutshell. I enjoyed the book, I thought it moved very quickly, and I was left wanting (and hoping for) more.
The book intentionally commits to the Victorian Gothic style...so expect it to feel close to reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or The Portrait of Dorian Gray. I.e., it can feel a little clunkier and more dry than a modern-American style novel...but it's an intentional style choice, so I'm not knocking any points off for that.
Accepting that style choice, the book is a page turner; I read it straight through in a few days and was hooked, wanting to know what happens to each character next. Otherwise, some reviewers have described this as a gay vampire book...but there's one gay couple in the novel, which is overshadowed quickly by a straight couple. So, yes, it has good character diversity, but, no, this is not a "gay vampire book".
Definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
