Guardian of Ajalon was a wonderful conclusion to the Poison Tree Chronicles. I loved learning how the story lines of the first two books were interwoven. Questions I had as I read the first two books were answered and I found myself reflecting often on the symbolism that I had not picked up on before even though I had read the first two books twice. Now I'm wanting to read the story from start to finish. The many layers to the characters and the story line were masterfully developed. Without giving you a spoiler alert, do be prepared to read on and on and on!

Guardian of Ajalon The Poison Tree Path Chronicles Joan Campbell 9781683700807 Books Reviews
Guardian of Ajalon by Joan Campbell is the third and final book in The Poison Tree Path Chronicles. I haven't read the first two book but, apart from a couple of minor details, I found I could pick up the story and enjoy it.
The book follows the adventures and fortunes of a number of people - Shara with Eliad and Andreo travel the perilous poison tree path through the Ri'twine. Her friend Nicco waits in the hidden Grotto, as this place of resistance against the Highborn kings of Tirragyl faces the approach of King Alexor's army, while Alexor' twin sister, Queen Nyla decides to stop hiding and enlist the aid of the Charab to stop her mad brother and scheming Lord Lucian from destroying the Grotto, reuniting the Guardian stones and destroying all of Tirragyl. The three stories are tied together with the reading of the book in the Old Tongue that tells of the fabled Kingdom of Ajalon and its Prince ‘Eshua.
I found the setup of the story intriguing as Campbell intertwines the different stories and brings it together in a riveting final battle. As the story progressed, and especially as the Book is read both by Eliad to Shara and by the Commander Mikel to the Grotto (including Nicco), the allegorical nuances become apparent. The nature of the two different kingdoms, the time-shift or split between them, the death curse and the poison tree path, as well as Ab'El, 'Eshua and the Goldbreast were fresh ways of representing the biblical story. Descriptions of Ajalon and of Ab'El and especially 'Eshua and the Goldbreast are delightful and the poison tree apt. And while it took time to warm to the other characters (perhaps because I hadn't read the first two books), the book is full of action, set-backs, danger, desperate situations, and twists, as Nicco and the people of the Grotto and Nyla and her companions fight to save the Grotto and the world.
Because I hadn't read the previous two books, it took me a while to realise the Dusk Dreamer was a power stone rather than a person, and I'm still not sure what or who Vulcans are (not of the Spock kind, obviously - maybe some kind of light??) . More significantly, I did wonder a couple of things but these perceived anomalies didn't counteract both the moving passages and the gripping climax.
The Guardian of Ajalon by Joan Campbell is the third and final book in The Poison Tree Path Chronicles. I had not read the previous two books but decided to read the blurbs for them before starting this book. I am glad I did. Even though the author does well to catch up the reader without an info dump, it was good to already have an introduction to the main characters.
Each of the two previous books focused on a main female character and her protectors as they escape their various dangers. This book shifts back and forth between both Shara and Nyla's separate storylines. Each woman and her team of protectors are learning about the true king and the old magic in this book. With the direction of a magical bird, they both fulfill their callings.
At the very beginning, I didn't like either woman, but as the story progressed, I liked Shara more. Even so, Nyla has the most character development of anyone in the whole book and really captured me by the end. The men in the books were all supporting characters, but very interesting with unique personalities.
The two storylines never crossed, though the plot itself merges to one final battle. The main unifying aspect was the flashbacks all the characters experienced to learn more about the true king and true villain.
This book has a strong Christian message, but don't take it as allegory or will run into theological problems. I did appreciate the beauty and love emphasized in the personification of God the father and Jesus. You can't help liking them.
My main criticism is the pacing of the book. Shara spends the whole book traveling through a cursed forest, and Nyla spends the book arguing with people. There is a lot of character development and revelations of important information, but not much action. Even so, your curiosity does carry you through, and there aren't any truly dead parts. I was tempted to skim some of the slower section though.
The conclusion is the most exciting part of the book with a good resolution. I would have liked more concrete reconciliation of Nyla's love story with some sort of actual commitment, but that is a minor issue. The story wraps up each of the main problems with the threat to the world being the primary focus.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It is solid, clean, Christian Fantasy fiction in a magical medieval style world. I think readers from middle school and up could very much enjoy this book, and series, as well.
